China, a captivating country. Majestic, proud and diverse. A country of contrasts, acceleration and change. Supercharged cities and urban metropolises jostle alongside ancient pagodas. Neon lights illuminate hipster bars, modern sleek interiors rub shoulders with their wooden, lantern-lit counterparts. The old and the new, from the outside, appear to coexist harmoniously. A fascinating mishmash of the remnants of how things were coupled with an expectation and air of excitement as to what will come.
We had an amazing time during our recent trip to China and were fortunate enough to see some of the highlights. The Great Wall, of course, being one, The Forbidden City, The Bund, The Yellow Mountains and Yangtze River featured too. We feel as though we have experienced a mere taste, this vast country has always been on our “to go to” list but has nowhere near been awarded a tick!
Outside of the guidebooks
Some of my personal highlights of the trip, inevitably cannot be found in a guidebook. Playing badminton with an octogenarian in the park, delighting in her jianzi skills as she demonstrated kick ups, side flips and back shots. Waltzing down a designated “dancing street,” were couples jived, rock & rolled, tangoed and swayed, according to their mood and preferred style. This, we were told, is like Tinder, but a fun way to meet people in person. Laughing as my wife surreptitiously sucked the juice from a dumpling, hardly unable to believe herself and the noise emanating from her being. I’d better explain that Kerry is beyond infuriated by noisy eaters, she and her sisters are notorious for their annoyance at crunching, chewing and lip smacking slurps!
